Owner of Niello Company in Sacramento, CA

What first got you into the auto retail business?
I always had an interest in the Automobile Business since my grandfather was a Packard, Pierce Arrow dealer in San Francisco and my father was a very early Volkswagen Dealer in Sacramento. During High School and College I worked at my fathers Volkswagen store during the summers. It wasn’t until after college and I was an Army Reservist that I decided that I wanted to enter the Automobile Business. My first “serious” job in the car business was with Carl Carlsen Volkswagen in San Francisco in 1970.

When did you buy your first dealership?
In 1973 we purchased our first BMW dealership.

What is your personal dream car?
I really don’t have a favorite. The Niello Company is fortunate to represent almost all of the really great cars on the road today. But, we just purchased a 1935 Packard Convertible Sedan and I have a 1953 Buick Skylark and I really enjoy driving that!

How are you active in your local community? If so, what specific organizations do you contribute to and why?
The Niello Company is a big supporter of Children’s causes, local Arts and local Social Services. In 2006 we contributed over $150,000.00 to these local charities and plan on the same level in 2007.

When did you first get involved with AIADA and why?
My personal involvement with AIADA was about 1972 when I went to work for my father. In 1983 I was the AIADA official State Chairman for Audi. My father, Richard Niello, Sr. involvement in AIADA is worth noting. He was a member of the founding board that was established in 1970. This board subsequently became AIADA as we know it today. His early involvement in AIADA was critical as it relates to its direction today.

What makes a great auto dealer?
Leadership and a strong desire to work with people are very important ingredients for success. I would also add team building, embracing change, always striving to be the best and an ability to take calculated risks.
